If you press L1 then square on a unit type you get movement options. Things like charge, follow, engage, halt, fallback etc. When you're selecting non shortcut options (options not mapped to any buttons) you need to use your right stick to hover over the option then press R2.
I keep a few in areas I frequent. I would say that the best thing to do is just to rid around to random places all over the map. Well I don't use mods but I would assume having to load more would slow it down. Test it both ways. Vanilla and modded. However just switching to your ssd will significantly improve load times. I use a bunch of mods and have an average computer and get pretty quick load times, solid state is the key.
